Sanctuary City Leaders May Have Just Received The Worst News Of Their Life


Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen of Homeland Security confirmed on Tuesday that her agency has requested that the Justice Department look into policies that would allow elected leaders to face criminal charges if they refuse to enforce federal immigration laws.
During a Senate Judiciary Committee oversight hearing, Nielsen said that a request has been submitted to DOJ for consideration.
“The Department of Justice is reviewing what avenues might be available,” Nielsen told California Sen. Kamala Harris.
Nielsen was asked by Harris about comments made recently by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tom Homan.
Homan remarked in an interview with Fox News that the Justice Department had been asked to “look into criminal charges for elected officials with sanctuary policies as they are harboring illegal aliens.”
Homan was specifically referencing a law passed on Jan 1st in California that helps to strengthen sanctuary policies. The Trump administration has aimed to take down the policies put in place by Sanctuary municipalities. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, known for being hard against immigration, has done everything in his power to block criminal justice grants from being given to sanctuary cities.
Nielsen defended her agency’s request to DOJ.
“The context of this is of course not only putting my ICE officers at risk but also finding an efficient and effective way to enforce our immigration laws,” she told Harris.
This is awful news for the State governments of California, New York, Illinois, and other sanctuary states that have refused to capitulate to the immigration requests of the federal government.
If Trump is able to push through his immigration plan, and build the wall like he plans to, states like California would have to comply, they would have to build the wall, and they would have to assist the federal government with the removal of millions of illegal immigrants.
